RURAL MOBILITY SERVICES – Bischofshofen, Austria

Organization of train trips, sale of tickets for public passenger transport, seasonal public bus transport, on-call transport for rural residents and visitors, rental of electric vehicles and micro-mobile means of transport, all this and more under the management of the regional mobility centre MOBILITO, Ltd.

Sankt Johann im Pongau is an administrative district in the Austrian federal state of Salzburg, Pongau region. The district is divided into twenty-five municipalities with a total population of 79,500. Bischofshofen is one of three towns within the district of Sankt Johann im Pongau. In Bischofshofen, since 1999, MOBILITO, a mobility centre for the entire district and a tourist agency, has been operating, offering public passenger transport services, planning, developing, managing mobility and sustainable mobility on behalf of the municipalities and selling train travels. MOBILITO is one of the seven organizations in the Pongau Regional Association.

MOBILITO as a tourist agency, with premises at the main railway station in the city centre, provides information on timetables, options and combinations of sustainable mobility means, sells tickets for public passenger transport in the region and train tickets for the whole of Europe and organises train travels around the world. In the role of a regional mobility manager and an operator, the organisation plans and upgrades mobility and sustainable tourism and holiday services for the Pongau region.

MOBILITO, as the operator, introduced the Werfenweng-Shuttle (W 3 Shuttle) shuttle system, 20 bus routes with 511,300 kilometres driven annually, 3 lines with 8-seater vehicles with 280,000 kilometres driven annually, a night taxi line on weekends and holidays with 4,300 annual kilometres.

Werfenweng-Shuttle has been providing door-to-door van transport since 2000. The user must order a van at least one hour before the scheduled departure and a regular van service is available every two hours from Bischofshofen train station to Werfen and back. The service is available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., 365 days a year, on three lines. In 2000, 7,000 people were driven, and in 2022, 52,000 people and the number is still growing. The average occupancy of vans is 95%. The number of kilometers driven also increased; in 2000, they driven 90,000 km with two vans, and 390,000 km last year with eight vans. Operating costs are high; from 105,000 EUR in the year 2000 to 580,000 EUR in 2022. The service is financed by the regional public transport system Pungau-Takt.

The Pongau Regional Association also has the task of regional spatial planning, in accordance with the Spatial Planning Act, the regional development concept and the regional plan. It closely cooperates with the government level in sectoral programs and the Regional Development Program of Salzburg. It is also a regional advisory body for spatial planning.

Information about the operation of MOBILITO and the Pongau regional association was obtained during the MOBILITA study visit of the ReMOBIL group, on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
