Kranj, August 2025 – The Gorenjska region is moving closer to a cleaner, greener future in public transport thanks to the Zero Carbon Infrastructure (ZCI) project. Over the last six months, the project has focused on bringing new knowledge, good practices, and concrete steps to support the electrification of regional bus lines.

Below we present the main activities of the 6-month period.

International Partners Meet in Kranj

On 12–13 March 2025, the BSC, Business Support Center, Ltd, Kranj (BSC Kranj) welcomed international partners of the ZCI project for a two-day meeting and study visit. The gathering was an opportunity to share experiences, discuss project progress, and explore how European regions can work together to accelerate the shift to electric mobility.

Seeing the Future in Action

On the second day, guests were invited to see Gorenjska’s electric public transport system in action. They visited newly installed charging stations for the municipal electric buses in Kranj and toured the local bus depot, where several buses are already operating on clean energy. The visit also showcased future plans to further expand electrified public transport in the region.

Next Big Goal: Electrifying Interregional and regional Bus Lines

BSC Kranj is now working to include a major new initiative in the Regional Development Plan 2021–2027—the electrification of interregional bus lines. One of the key routes planned for electrification is Ljubljana – Kranj – Škofja Loka – Ljubljana.

This ambitious step builds on the experience of European cities such as Burgas (Bulgaria), Parma (Italy), and Pamplona (Spain), which have already successfully introduced electric buses into their transport systems.

Building the Foundations

To make this vision possible, BSC Kranj has started carrying out important studies, including cost-benefit analyses, market research and transport simulations. At the same time, they are bringing together a consortium of partners who will help drive the project forward and secure the necessary funding.

Towards a Cleaner Future

With government support and strong collaboration across Europe, Gorenjska is on the right path to a zero-carbon public transport system that will benefit both residents and the environment.
